Psychic guards and newbies 1 Month, 1 Week ago

Hey all, newbie here, Im just starting my adventure in the game, I played the demo and loved it so I recently just got the gold version and Hero 3 and I think Mithril halls its called. Great game, you really dont see them like this anymore.
Before I get into my issues let me just say I've been playing RPGs since the days of Might and Magic and Ultima (im that old, sigh), despite this though im a bit spoiled by modern RPGs like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, so I just play games for fun and I dont care at all about being challenged anymore, I just care about what lets me enjoy the storyline (and level up) faster.
Firstly, whats up with the psychic guards? They seem to automatically know when any crime is committed, I mean I did the Thurm Treasure quest and somehow getting the share of the gold for Thurm is a crime and they knew right away. Wow, you'd think crime would be non existent with such Psychic guards These guards are worthless too, they dont even lift a finger if im chased into town by monsters. That minor annoyance aside, my real problem is leveling.
I figured out Quests dont provide XP, ok fair enough but that just leaves grinding on enemies, but they dont seem to respawn so im constantly fighting enemies i can barely make a dent in and its sucking up my gold and potion supply. Am I doing something wrong? how can I get enough levels that when i go into a new area i can at least hold my own? Right now im a level 7 Rasvim (and yes, I have enchanted Resist Magic gear, and im using my undead magic powers)and so far I finished with Vastaras more or less, did the nobleman quest, gold for thurm, and the witch and her husband quest, and im ready to move forward or goto the sunken dungeon for a book, but I cant even scratch these enemies now despite having good gear. What are my options? anyway to get alot more powerful even if its shall we say 'explotive'?
Thanks for any help, and this is really the best ipod game I've played, heck its better them alot of new games these days.

Hi LenaMarie, and welcome to the crowd.
The guards are just the way they are: Not an optimal solution (which would be quite complicated, like word of your crime spreading slowly over the days and the guards chasing you through the city), but one to deal with crimes committed by you.
Leveling:
Quests do give experience, and more when you get further into the game. Monsters respawn after you have not visited an area for 7 ingame days.
But honestly, so far I have never needed that to level up extra.
The Quest is pretty nonlinear, meaning you can wander around almost wherever you want right from the beginning. And run into some really tough monsters then, too
If you can give a hint on what you have been doing so far before you got to Vastares, it might help in pointing you in the right direction.
I spent hours in the area north of Vastares, fighting monsters and doing quests there, before I ever got to Vastares itself. And I was at least level 10 then, if I remember right.
Buying - or finding - better equipment makes a huge difference in the beginning, the same goes for spells and potions. Stuff like "Stone Skin" to raise your AC, or a "Fortify Melee" potion to help you in a tough fight makes quite a difference.
What skills did you select as your 6 main skills? For example, you need a certain level of light/heavy armour to get the full AC value of your pieces, from what I know depending on the AC value of a piece. The higher your light/heavy weapon skills, the more damage you do.
Sunken dungeon was pretty hard, so you will have to level up and get some better equipment first, I guess. Also, if I remember right, the spell "Harm Undead" was pretty handy down there.
Can you post what other areas and monsters you have problems with? Also, an overview of your equipment would be good, to point out room for improvement.

Thanks for the reply and welcome! Thats strange about quests, I havent seemed to notice getting any XP from doing them, perhaps some certain ones dont?
As for what I've been doing, I did the ones in Matras, I cured the sickness, stopped the smugglers, rescued the wife, got the boy (well girl hehe) to the recruiter, I helped Nadia, her husband and daughter, been to the Amazon caves and dealth with them, got an idol for an orc, even helped the Bandit wizard with his 3 skulls then made my way over to Vatras and did thrums treasure quest, I helped the nobleman and found the murderer, I helped the husband and wife apothecary.
Im level 7 focusing on Str (35), Int (28) and Personality (20) while the skilled I picked where Heavy Weaps (49), Heavy Arm(30), persuade (33), repair, block(30) and undead magic(36). I've also been diligently reading books for the skill boosts. I also have some nice equipment I got from the Vatras, like the champion plate and the dragon blade. My AC is 27 and HP is 80, SP is 140. It says i do 10-31 dmg.
Maybe Im somehow not finding quests? because it seems the only thing i have left in Vatras is the sunken dungeons and getting the attention of the thieves guild for the main quest. So it seems like I had made it pretty far but perhaps at a low level for it.
Thanks for any help

Not all the quests give you an xp boost. I would work on increasing your mercantile skill so you can buy low in Matras and sell high every where else.
Work on increasing your ability to mark (increase your int and environment magic.)
Work on increasing your ability to enchant your items and keep a "persuade suit", "mercantile suit" etc.
If you read the Quest Guru's lounge here you can pick up some great tips.
Welcome. : )

Sorry, I do not have an old savegame around to check the difficulty of the Sunken Dungeon. But I can remember I got my butt wacked all over the place the first time I got there. In the beginning, a few levels make a huge difference. So just save it for later, you got alot to explore still
You got all quests in the area north of Vastares, if my memory does not fail me, so you are doing good. Did you open all doors in the Amazon Cave and the weird mage's (the one looking for the 3 skulls) lair? There is some good equipment behind them.
To add to Cat's advise about the enchanting: In the beginning, good stuff to enchant is hard to come by, so pick carefully what you do with it. Once you get to Mithria, you can buy some nice items with good enchant storage. Till then, my advise is to wait until you really need a boost from better gear, and then enchant for exactly what you need. For example higher persuasion to solve a certain quest, or better weapon skill to show a particular nasty monster where the hammer hangs.
Also, always keep your stuff in good repair.
Oh, and you want to wait with reading all those skillbooks until your skills max out at 100: Only books and some special events can raise them past 100. And you can read each book only once.
Aside from buying low and selling high, the card game is a good way to make money in the beginning. Especially once you get to the places where you can place higher bets (give the Vastares Inns a try, if you can bet 1000 or more, it is good for easy money). In between (bets from 100-1000) it is still ok, if you need a bit of extra cash, and have some patience.
Cannot think about much else to say right now (brain is on holiday ). If you have more questions, just ask away.
Have fun with the game,
Shein

I found sunken dungeon to be roughly a level eight dungeon. But the nice thing about it is there are permanent attribute potions just inside!

Thanks for all the tips, they do help but where can I go to level up more, that wont completely slaughter me? Im guessing its somewhat of a miracle I managed to do all those missions and only made it to level 7, is there no set areas for certain level players to goto?

Try going West from Vastares and paying the dwarfs a visit in their cave under the mountains...

If you head southweat of Vasteres toward the Monastery you should find even more things to whack on. Bring resist magic potions for the shamans. There are more quests that involve characters in the Monastery.
The sunken monastery dungeon is pretty hard. For sure you need magic resistance. Ranged spells/weapons help a lot.
Welcome!

For the sunken dungeon your going to want a wand or 2 of cure wounds touch. Its incredible effective against undead. When i went in there i was lvl 7 and came out lvl 10. But i never figured out how to get rid of the green magic barriers. Ive hit all of the switches and kill everything. What do i do?

I think the guide will explain all that. You get behind the green force fields using teleporters in the chasm room. The force fields themselves don't come down--you just teleport to behind them. Have you crossed the chasm yet?

To get the green barriers down uou need to go to the Chasm Room. On the wall to the right of the entrance is a button the looks like a brick. Tap it, and the fields go down.
