Hi all,

I'm wondering how the magic power/ effects of magic in general are influenced.

If I take an attack spell which has a certain amount of damage and uses a certain amount of SP, how is it influenced by the intelligence stat, the magic attack skill and fortify magic I get from rings and such?

If I look my attack spells up in the status screen, the amount of damage/SP usage changes, when I (un-)equip items with +attack magic. But they don't change when my intelligence goes up or if I put on some fortify magic equip. Doesn't depend the power of spells on int and fortify magic? Or is it just not shown in the status screen.

Because on the other hand I noticed, while trying to maximise my enchant capability that I can enchant higher if I change my +100 Environment Ring for my +40% fortify magic ring.
But it does NOT add 40% to my env magic value (calculated based on the enchant amount shown when trying to enchant).

So I would be very grateful if someone could give me as much information as possible about this (formulas and rows of numbers welcome ) since I'm eager about understanding how to get the best out of my character.

My understanding is intelligence is the governing attribute for magic users and their stats and power.

Then environment magic.

If you maximize your intelligence and environment magic you can mark more spots and generally get more impact from enchant.

To enchant to the max drink a lot of fortify magic potions.

This is a little bit superficial but I think the Quest Gurus' Lounge has more posts about this and I have to finish testing Ratz. : )

The use of magic is an arcane field, governed by many inscrutable factors.
In other words do whatever works, but bear in mind that for example fortify magic of 100% will double your prowess. 50 extra skill points will only double your prowess if your existing skill points are 50 . If less than 50 they will more than double, etc.etc.
Or at least that's how it seems to work for me.
So what you really have here is a couple of simultaneous equations, fairly simply expressed if you have the patience.
Of course you then have to add in that for example the more powerful you are the more manna attack magic costs, but environment magic remains the same. And then that some monsters have magic resistance, so stuff is less effective. And also that your absolute level has an impact as well!
I'm guessing that by now you will need to use calculus to maximise your character's potential for each encounter, and I would love to see your formulae once you have pulled it all together!
In the meantime, do you mind if I just quietly play, and leave you to the higher maths?

Pardon me, sir, but aren't you the one who is posting on this forum how to exploit permanent gush at character level 1 by rushing through half the main game while artificially avoiding encounters to maximise your stats?
I don't quite understand why you're trying to say I should concentrate on gaming rather than trying to "exploit" the game.

It's just that I want to fully understand what is going on -is that so odd and absurd?

I don't abuse any opportunities given by the game (going to expansions and grab stuff and such silly things) but I do want to use my equipment right.

Sorry if I sound rude, don't mean to.
But putting countless hours into a videogame is pointless to me if I do not understand what is going on on the tiny screen in front of me.

Since here're devs of (part of) the game (aren't they?) I thought they could drop me a line like "base damage of spell + int + attack skill x %fortify magic = damage" or something like this.

Oh well, I have to stop comparing videogames to pen&paper games where everything is checkable clear to understand.

Get back to gaming know as suggested.

Dear Reiko,

1. There is no difference between "gaming" and "exploiting"
2. If you want the formulae handed to you on a plate, you will need to speak to the original creators of the game. I doubt me you will get an answer, but there again, stranger things have happened.
3. If the game permits it, then it is not abuse.
4. I'd still like to see the formulae you come up with, as I'm sure would everybody else.

As far as asking, your questions are good.

I did write the quests for the Quest but I was not the programmer of the Quest. With Sylon, I programmed the Official Expansion and all by myself I programmed the other expansions but I have to accept the math algorithms that are built into the game engine.

Stewe was the programmer for the base game and he's no longer with Redshift. Elendil is their programmer right now.

But there is a lot of knowledge here in bits and pieces about some answers to your questions.

Did you download the manual for the Quest from Redshift's site? I can post a copy if necessary. I think it's here somewhere.

Regarding Manual: I'm not the kind of first-ask-then-look guy so I read through many posts here and on playhaven, read the manual and experimented some time ingame.

But no answer was fully satisfying since in the game code has to be a specific formulae for magic and for many rpg's you can find it on some forums.
