Starter Race/Skill/Gender combos 1 Month, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 1
I've recently picked up Quest Gold, and I've been entranced by it; however, I've done some reading on the built-in help feature, and it turns out that there are a lot of quirks and features to picking races and main skills; I currently have a Nogur male with main skills of heavy weapon, heavy armor, attack magic, protection magic, repair, and block.

Could you guys reccommend me a combo of races and skills, along with a few playstyles? Archer, mage, warrior, etc.

Thanks

It may be easier to give you the skills that you probably don't need as primary skills, no matter which race you are playing, and these are:

Light weapon, Accuracy, Persuade, Lockpick, Alchemy, Light Armour, Block, Heal Magic, Protection Magic, Attack Magic, Mind Magic, Undead Magic, Repair, Mercantile, Disarm, Heavy weapon, dual wield and heavy armour

Which leaves you one critical primary skill (at least the way I play the game), which is environment magic.

What I'm really saying is there is no right or wrong approach, no weak or strong approach, just what you approach with, and each approach has its own challenges.

But if really pushed, and knowing I had to do "Dash to Mithria" (plenty of threads elsewhere), I'd probably go for a female Etherim with heavy armour, light armour, block, heal magic, protection magic and stealth. And oddly enough environment magic isn't on the list!

And if pushed harder, then my favourite combination so far has been:
Male nogur, with heavy and light weapon, heavy armour, persuade and repair. And again no environment magic.

So find what works for you, enjoy it, and then try something else, and see if that isn't fun too?

Best

I'm only on my second run through. (I started over when I got an iPad.) I have noticed that the game plays quite differently if you have a different race. I went Etherim the first time, Derth the second. The innate abilities you get tend to affect your play in the early part of the game, and you develop habits that stay with you.

Derth seems set up to rely on magic, and I found the race to be more powerful than Etherim in the initial phases. Magic isn't as effective in later expansions, though, so I've made sure to train some brute force skills as well.

You can eventually train or add points to all skills. After I've played awhile, I tend to balance my character. I don't know if sex makes a difference as I've only played female.

Really, it's just fun whatever you are. Pick a character type that resonates with you and go for it.

It is definitely useful to build skill in alchemy and environment magic at first. Collect enchant able stuff to shore up your weaknesses or provide an extra Boston when you need it.
